”Social change, in sociology, the alteration of mechanisms within the social structure, characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems.” Wilterdink, N., & Form, W. (2017, December 28). A perfect example of social change is technology and the internet. I remember growing up I did not have the luxury of having a laptop nor internet access, I had to do my research at the library; while now, children have access to the internet at their fingertip both at their homes and on their cell phones. The internet allows the younger generation to be more exposed to the things of the world; they act much more mature for their age than kids back then because of the things they are exposed to sex, criminial activities, etc. These children are getting more out of control as generation goes by, before as they say it takes a village to raise a child, in today’s day and age you cannot discipline another persons child or the parent will get upset and try to fight you if you try to correct their child’s wrongful behavior.

I believe social change is best described as being the only constant in society because it can not be controlled by any one person or group. Social change is constantly happening around everyone all the time. What helps me best to understand social change is by comparing it to watching a child grow up, it happens rather you are aware of it or not. Change is the combination of systematic factors along with unique or random factors. The biggest social change I have seen during my lifetime has been how society as a whole views the LGBT community and bisexuals. There is a much better understanding now through education and the media than there was when I was growing up. Now, most people do not assume because you are a man you have a wife and vise versa. I have noticed the quality of life for a gay person is changing for the better but there is still a long way to go.
